What "is" balance, anyway?
I used to work especially hard to balance my work, interests and priorities. I now believe that it is not possible to do so.
Honestly, as soon as I got one piece of life or work under some semblance of control, all I would do is up-level the whole game and add more to my already full and complicated life!
The big challenge my clients have is this: "If I wind up working more effectively and feeling more fit, what should I take on next?"
It's really a game called, The Never-Ending Story!
Here is an example. I was once working with a small group in a seminar setting. I shared this viewpoint:
If I clean out one area, whatever empty space I create will attract something new.
If I check off a to-do from a list, another one appears. If I donate a clothing item from my closet, I'll buy something new. If I empty a gas tank driving to a meeting, I'll have to fill it up again to get back home.
It's a constant, vigilant process to monitor our own effectiveness and work/life fitness. Ensure that your productivity really is giving you more of what you're looking to get. You know, they say that the original dishwashing machines were advertised to give the wife more time in the evening with her family...
