Are you nervous? You're racing in less than 16 hours!

Another "picture perfect" Ojai day. We sat with some friends outside the coffee shop this morning talking about all kinds of "Saturday" things. What bands are playing in Ojai tonight, what the new bakery in town is like, how nice the weather is going to be for the...

... and then someone turned and said, "Oh yeah, Jason, you're racing tomorrow!"

Funny, I hadn't forgotten about it! I can honestly say this is one of the most nervous days I've had in a long time. Leaving the coffee shop, I even drove around the course one time.

Can you "just" write things down?

My writing teacher Deb demonstrates the power of writing things down in every class I attend. Here in Ojai, she offers weekly "write nights," and as a coach she encourages us to "keep the pen moving."

In a class this month, I started wondering about the power of writing things done in ALL areas of life, and work, and sport, and...then I came up with a question. What I wrote even MORE things down, free of expectation or anticipation?

MOVE your way to success

Although I wrote this about "physical" training, I re-read it and I think it applies to anything. If you have a goal out there, whether it's personal or work related, consider a MOVE to success...

We have all experienced training sessions where we are relaxed, focused, and inspired. Maybe you were on a long weekend run.  Perhaps you were reading an article about someone else's "PR." Did you notice time disappear? When this happens, we're in what sports psychologists refer to as "the Zone." For some of us, though, finding our zone is more of an accident than the norm.

What IS important to leadership?

Five Most Important Leadership Traits

Some people sit and pontificate about whether leaders are made or born. The true leader ignores such arguments and instead concentrates on how to become a better... The less time you have to spend on getting people to follow you, the more time you have to spend refining exactly where you want to go and how to get there.

I enjoyed reading this post, and actually "clicked through," and read to the end.

Slow down, and speed up...literally!

Some readers of this blog have followed over the years as I went from "fat to fit." I don't write about all my athletic experiences, but when I'm inspired I like to share that with my small community.

I entered a 10K run two weekends ago. At dinner with some friends here in Ojai the night before, I explained my strategy for the race. Based on a race earlier in the season, I had started outlining a "pacing strategy" for the Carpinteria, CA "Ocean to Orchard" run.

What is Workplace Performance?

I am speaking and consulting more and more on this platform:

"Perform at (your) 100%"

The idea came to me accidentally, several years ago. In order to present a workshop for the senior management of a Fortune 500 company, I had to drive 344 miles unexpectedly. My travel day (the day before) consisted of me flying from Los Angeles to Chicago, then from Chicago to Cleveland.

Arriving late in Chicago, I had missed the original connecting flight. So, I had to wait for the later one. At 11:15pm that night, all flights out of Chicago were canceled.

Each day, incorporate process and procedure development

Last week, I was on the phone with a client looking to "balance" their life and work interests. The more we discussed what was "along the way" and what was "in the way," we came up with different areas to address.

Set aside the tools and the time you can use to develop any of these:
Strategy (*see below)
Organization (*more to come...)
Brainstorming (*more to come...)
Purging (*more to come...)

Consider drawing a “time line” that starts with today and ends 365 days from now. Go ahead and write those two dates. Then, draw a line halfway through – write that date (6 months from now).

Fun Math!

Not sure what to do with this, my brother sent it over to me and I laughed out loud...

So, for now I'm just sharing things that make me smile. I promise to get some more "serious" blog entries together about managing focus and performance soon!

Voice-America business interview...Goal Setting

Here's an interview I did with Roey Diefendorf, based on "end-of-the-year" processes: project acknowledgment and goal setting. Enjoy...

Garrett Lemire Memorial Grand Prix

Well, thanks to a little help from my friends, I've signed up for my first "road race." Yes, after racing triathlon for 7 years, it's time to mix things up a little bit!

The Garrett Lemire Memorial Grand Prix started the year Garrett's parents lost their son - while racing. Here is the open letter to the community about their son, their loss, and this race.

Ever since watching Lance Armstrong race - in our little Ojai! - a couple of years ago, I've wanted to join this race. So, come April 1st, at 8:30am, I'll line up with the best of them.
