One laptop per child

Hey, do you remember YOUR first computer? I do. In fact, I remember the computer BEFORE my first computer...I watched as my little brother worked overtime to understand Prodigy...wayyyyyy back when.

Well, now I'm jumping to support another first. The One Laptop per child initiative. I invite you to join in as well. This could, quite frankly, change our world for the better.

One learning child. One connected child. One laptop at a time.

The mission of One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) is to empower the children of developing countries to learn by providing one connected laptop to every school-age child. In order to accomplish our goal, we need people who believe in what we’re doing and want to help make education for the world’s children a priority, not a privilege.

Between November 12 and November 26, OLPC is offering a Give One Get One program in the United States and Canada. During this time, you can donate the revolutionary XO laptop to a child in a developing nation, and also receive one for the child in your life in recognition of your contribution.

Do you have an idea? Did you? Will you?

If so, act on it. Do something about your thinking, and you will experience a little bit of success today. If you want to be more productive and more effective ya gotta do something about what you think about. Do, move, act, call, e-mail, review, draft – take an action soon!

Focus on what you can do, where you are, with what you have. (Thanks to Teddy Roosevelt for that quote, by the way.) You can and will achieve more success by being proactive, looking for simple and consistent actions to move your projects forward and celebrating accomplishment. Start right now, when you finish reading this, go look at your desk and DO something to completion.

Make your time important.

All too often, people over commit and under deliver. In fact, as you read this, bring to mind a promise you have made to someone else (or yourself), and ask yourself if it has “been too long.” By too long I mean, you promised you would have had something done by now, and it’s not finished yet. If that is the case, stop worrying, do not ask yourself why it is not done, simply go on and do something about it.

It may be surprising how much you can get done if you set yourself up for success. There are many ways of doing this, here are a few I know work!

Thanks coach (what would we do without mentors?)

I met my running coach back in 1996. In fact, we've known each other since then, but I just started running under his tutelage this year! So, in preparing for my race this weekend, I mailed him this question:

I'm planning to race on Sunday [Ventura-14th Annual Salmon Run], will you be there? I'd love to hear your "race-day" strategy for the 5K distance. I've just gone out there in the past, and done it without a lot of coaching/advice!

His response surprised me - though I know it should not have. Here's a guy who is dedicated to making his best...better! Check out what he wrote me today...

My only take on racing is if you race, you race. It's not a workout, you compete. Now, on the other hand, since it's not THE race we're preparing for, we do run "thru" it to the extent that we don't taper, but day of, it's game on. Get a good warm-up. I'll see you there.

Before and After (part 1)

Occasionally, I get to eat breakfast on the plane...and when I do, I like to keep the same "health-habits" going so I can feel great about the trip, stay on track with my goals, and maintain my physiological balance.

So, here's a picture of what was included in the breakfast. You've read my notes before on portion sizes, nutrition and healthy habits...so, it won't be a surprise that I didn't eat the entire breakfast.


I'll be honest and say this is one of the most difficult habits I've ever created...

A myth...or a promise?

During my workout this morning at the Music Road Inn (though I'm staying in the hotel!), here in Pigeon Forge, TN, I had a stream of thought...

Is time management a myth, or does time management make us a promise?

This all stemmed from an interview I was listening from LoanToolbox [this week I'm working with a loan originator in her office] as the two participants discussed the interesting area of "Credit Scores."

I realized that my "career" is a bit like that of a mortgage broker: I work to match each individual with a support structure that is specific to their needs. My field has to do with productivity and work/life engagement (instead of finance) but the similarities are amazing.

I'm going in for our second day together today...and I am looking forward to seeing what we can learn about the myth AND the promise of time management.

How do you work out, when you're out working?

Ok, here's another idea for those of you who are "too busy" to exercise...

I pack workout gear and healthy snacks with me, lay workout gear on the bed before I leave for work, ask the concierge for recommendations for nearby gyms and running trails, shop for 3 bottles of water/day at the corner store before I get to the hotel, cut my food in half and ask for it to be put in a to go container when at restaurants know for large portions, prep as much as possible, so I get my normal hours of sleep even while traveling...

Other behaviors I’ve learned: I unplug the TV when I arrive at a hotel, and I bring dry erase pens with me to write something inspirational on the bathroom mirror. None of these items individually is earth shattering, but combined they create a supportive lifestyle that nurtures me wherever the world I am.
