Who's rooting for you? (Another entry about "team")

Over the past few weeks, I have experienced the joy and blessing of a "team" of people who stand by my side...when the going is good, and when the going is tough.

With some extra "thinking" time this afternoon (cancelled flights will do that, ya know), I reflected on this for a while.

The following question landed in my journal over dinner: "Who's rooting for you?" As I made a list of people who I think are in my corner, I then asked myself WHY?

Why (do I think) are they there to help me, encourage me, and push me to be and do my best? The answer I wrote: Because I am rooting for them, I am a fan of who and how they are, and I am interested in what they are doing.

So, the questions are:

Who is rooting for you? ...and... Who are you rooting for?

I'm so glad I know it's not about TIME management

Every now and then, the universe comes together in a way to remind me of why I am so interested and dedicated to sharing productivity techniques, tools and strategies with "current reality" in mind.

You see, I had set today up weeks ago to be an easy-to-get through day. I was going to arrive at the Los Angeles Airport early (I did) and fly to Dallas. I was going to have plenty of time for a lay over (I did) and then take a 4pm flight to Raleigh.

Then, my 4pm was canceled, and now my 8'ish pm is delayed. So, can you see what I mean about the title to this post?

The question to ask myself is not, "How can I manage the next few hours of time?" Instead, it IS, "What will I do between now and the time I land in Raleigh so I can be fresh for the stage at 8am?"

On to the next thing...dinner!

The Wall Street Journal talks about sending a thank you card!

I send thank you cards on a regular basis. Three, four, five times per week I meet or think of SOMEONE to say thank you to. For a few days, you can read this article on the Wall Street Journal website about sending thank you after an interview...

Who do you know who...uses the Amazon Kindle?

This is a quick "call for assistance" to the blogger community.

I am looking to hear from anyone using the Amazon Kindle who "kinda" matches this profile:

- on an airplane 2-6 times per week
- enjoys reading
- reads fiction AND non-fiction
- likes to reference books/passages in speeches, articles and coaching projects
- reads an average of 90 minutes daily
- has a library that circulates regularly

This is an honor, and gives me an extra bit of added momentum to start 2008 on the right foot! My goals list for next year just got longer...

Three ways to focus on the MITs

Well, it's February 1st, 2008 (does that surprise ANYone else???) and the new year is well underway. I wanted to share a few ideas about how I slow down to increase my productivity. Here are three ways I focus on The Most Important Things:

1) Turn off your computer monitor, and set an alarm to work on one "file" for 15 minutes. Read, write or plan until the alarm tells you 15 minutes have passed. Whenever I do this, I re-up the agreement at the end of the allotted time. Work more on the same thing, or "task-switch" to something different. I find that the "15-minute" start is a great way to just get started...

2) At the end of the day, write 3 specific projects you want to work on the next day. Put that paper with your car keys, purse or wallet. Then, in the morning look at that list before you leave for work, and decide: Yes or No! You might find that you have a NEW idea of what to do that day. But, whatever you do, it'll be more "on purpose" for your day.

 

3) Ask someone to watch you work for an hour. Don't talk with them, and don't do anything differently - just respond to e-mails, file papers, write notes...do what you normally do. At the end, ask them to tell you what they saw. How did you stay focused, and where did you lose focus? I've learned SO much by doing this that I continue to do it once or twice a year...
