We have all heard it said a thousand times, “Practice makes … comfortable.”
Wait, did you think I was going somewhere else with that sentence? I believe there is sufficient evidence in both the world and in our own lives that practice does not make perfect. Repetition does not inevitably lead to perfection. You know it and I know it.
There are some tasks that even with our most diligent practice, we can not perfect. No matter how many times we attempt them, perfection remains just out of reach. I would argue, however, that practice leads to comfort. Repeated attempts lead to our feeling more at ease with most tasks.
Haven’t you found that the more often you repeat an action, the easier it is to try it again?
Repetition yields relaxation whether we achieve perfection or not. Practice makes comfortable. It is in the midst of this comfortable practice that habits are formed. As we engage, we invest. Eventually repetition leads to effortlessness. Before we know it, habitual actions become second nature. We are able to act without even thinking. But while some habits are beneficial, some are not.
While some habits grow our business, our relationships, our selves, some do not. Make no mistake; all habits are born from repeated action.
All habits are the result of practice. The key is to invest your time and energy in the habits that are making your best even better. What habits have you formed that are less than beneficial?
