Who do you know who works in jobs that support students of all ages?

I am very excited to be one of several presenters at the Student Support Summer Leadership Institute. The week-long institute includes presentations by: Cathy Bray, Emily Desmond, Dr. Ken Gray, Dr. Esther Hugo, Dr. Carolyn Stone and Marie Tyra.

Here is a link to see the overview...

The presentation takes place on August 5th and is titled:

Improving Your Workplace Performance And Time Management Skills

I felt honored to get the invitation to present during this week; it brings back a lot of the memories I have of working as a master teacher, sports coach, and "resource-guy" for 7th-12th grade students throughout the 1990’s.

Skeptical??? Welcome, please come in!

I recently opened my inbox to read this message (after one of our MWP seminars for a client in New York City):

I'm quite a big skeptic when it comes to these types of courses but I have to say the course that you delivered was absolutely beneficial!  It has most certainly increased my productivity and I enjoy using the email system that you have created!

We are running a "public" program in Portland later this summer, for an organization called High Performers...

Ever since teaching high school (another lifetime ago, it seems!), I've had a saying:

"Please be skeptical, but don't be critical. You just may find something you can use!"

So, when I read this short e-mail from a client, I wore a big smile on my face. I'm excited about the possibilities of sharing this information with more and more people. We're getting ready to launch another DVD (that's exciting) and by next January we'll have a completely new coaching and consulting program for clients who want to maximize their health/fitness AND the productivity/careers...

Here's to the future!

Portland, OR - September 9, 2008: Two Presentations

Hello to the Pacific Northwest! I'll be in Portland for a few days in September, and wanted to "spread the word" about a couple of events people may be interested in attending. I am very excited about both events; the first one is a customized presentation that I've been presenting since 2007. The second one is a "sneak preview" of a presentation we'll begin offering in January of 2009!

The morning presentation:
“Maximizing Workplace Performance” Jason’s renowned signature seminar is presented throughout the US and around the world. It focuses on three distinct areas of workflow control and increased productivity.

And the afternoon:
"Get a Life! How Busy People Manage a Fulfilling Personal Life With a Successful Career" Alright, alright- we know you have a very demanding career that leaves little time for family, friends or hobbies. Just because most people don't have a very good balance between their work and their life doesn't mean you need to join them!

For more information on both events, just click here! (Or, click on the picture below for an overview of the morning presentation...)

Do you ever get nervous?

Do you ever get nervous?

It is an interesting question to ask a professional speaker. And, my answer, with a smile, is always yes!

But, it is not that "oh-my-goodness-I-am-gonna-be-sick" nervous stage-fright I had as a kid. This is more like:

Can I, in the time I have been allotted, provide value for 130+professionals looking for information on how to "manage more?"

So, preparing a few hours a week, researching and testing constantly, and coaching people around the world prepares me to stand up and "do my thing."

Oh, and a nice, warm cup of tea helps as well!

The next time you have the opportunity to speak in front of a large group...take it!

Group presentations are something I am comfortable doing, although I do admit I still get nervous when I get up in front of professionals to do a day or two of talking. I’ve learned a lot over the years about what to do (and what NOT to do), but one of the things that I count on for my success is an ability I have practiced and picked up over the years...

The ability to talk with people, in front of them.

It’s not the eye contact you may have seen presenters do where they constantly dart their eyes all over the room. It’s almost as if they’re trying NOT to look at anyone, the way I have seen people address everyone but talk to no one!

I’ve got a couple of tricks up the old sleeve to make this doable; I’m not going to give them all away, but here’s one I like to share with new and experienced speakers alike.

I remember that even though I am speaking in front of a large group, all of those people are individuals.

And, at the end of the day (or if it’s shorter, at the end of the hour), people are going to remember us and our connection more than they will remember all of our content.

One question on people’s minds when they start listening to you is: Can I trust you?
Eye contact can go a long way in establishing trust.

Another question people ask themselves as they continue to listen is: Does this speaker know what they are talking about?
Eye contact can establish that as well.

Oh, one more question is: Does the speaker really care...do they care about what they are doing, do they care about me?
And, let me tell ya, eye contact is a way to let someone know you care.

So, next time you’re invited to the “front of the room.” Take the opportunity and roll with it. And, of course, let me know what shows up!

An upcoming mind mapping (visual mapping) conference

I got a note from Brian Friedlander, and thought to share it with the community here...

I have been a HUGE fan of "visual mapping" for years. Somehow, my teachers in high school were onto something back in the 80's, and through university and then graduate school I relied heavily on this learning/assessing technique.

As a teacher in the late 90's (high school US History and Spanish Language), I used mind-mapping (as we called it) daily...and, now it's a primary tool in my writing, speaking and coaching practices.

Here is the note from Brian...

I am planning a mind mapping (visual mapping) conference and was wondering what topics you would want to see covered during a conference of this kind?

On October 3, 2008 I will be hosting a full day conference on how to use visual mapping to your advantage in your organization. Learn how to take visual mapping to the next level and see just how powerful a tool this can be, to help you reach your personal, academic, or business goals.

The conference will be hosted and led by Brian S. Friedlander, Ph.D. and his professional team of preeminent visual mappers who include: Adam Clayman, Stephanie Diamond, Chuck Frey, Arjen Ter Hoeve, Kyle McFarlin, and Wallace Tait. His assembled team comes from such areas as banking, psychology, manufacturing, business management, marketing and college teaching. For more information, visit this site.

I watched this presentation again today...if you only have 9 minutes, skip to minutes 15-24...they're worth their time in gold!

10-minutes to talk about fitness

Occasionally, someone asks a question that gets me talking about a "subset-interest" of mine:

Physical Fitness.

As the "Productivity Guy" (another title I hear from time to time), I know there is a connection between the physical, mental, emotional and energetic levels of engagement. I mean, if I don't sleep enough on the night after a big race, I'm a little more tired and focusing is a bit of a challenge the next day - it's just a little harder to get everything done. (And, yes, I've tried this before, in November of 2005! *Please read the post continuation for the full story...)

I'm preparing a FREE 10-minute TeleSeminar presentation for a client here in California titled:
"Kick Start Your Fitness Program."

As I prepare my comments, I would appreciate any questions/ideas/facts/suggestions from the "blogging community." If you'd like me to cover something specific, just leave a comment below, or e-mail me directly. Oh, by the way, I'll plan to make the recording available as an MP3...just let me know if you'd like me to send you a link.

(And, for anyone who would like to attend LIVE, send me an e-mail by 7am PST on 1 May 2008, and I'll send you the call-in information. I'm reserving a few conference lines for this community...)
