Years ago, I got to spend time with someone who is influential in the personal/professional development world: Lou Tice.
One of the things he taught me is to "flip-forward" in my thinking. Take what happened, acknowledge what is happening, and flip-forward to what could happen. Recently, I came across this blog post by another mentor of mine, Mark Fritz. Here's just a snippit...
The usual advice is to live in the present. The past is behind you, and the future seems too far away to think about. Our current moments, as they say, are all we have. Generally, that's good advice...but there are times when thinking ahead can be valuable. In fact, looking into the future and planning ahead can lead to opportunities to do what you love and in the way you want to do it.
Here are five reasons to step outside of the moment and think ahead:

Many times the goal we set is simply there to get us started, to move us a yard or two forward, and then as soon as we start engaging, we notice there is more to notice.
